Roy Okola Otieno: Clean Energy Engineer & E-Mobility Specialist, Nairobi, Kenya

An engineer who deploys clean-energyinfrastructure in the field, and buildsthe software that keeps it measurable.

Clean Energy Engineer & E-Mobility Specialist

I design, deploy and operate solar PV, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure across East Africa. My experience spans e-mobility ventures, engineering firms and distributed-energy providers, alongside the software that makes those systems measurable.

01Profile

Powering Africa'sclean future.

I'm a renewable-energy and e-mobility specialist with hands-on experience in distributed energy infrastructure, EV-charging technology, and battery-swap system deployment across East Africa.

My work spans technical operations and system-uptime management, feasibility analysis and energy audits, and cross-functional coordination with contractors, utilities and regulatory agencies such as EPRA and EMAK.

Alongside the field engineering, I build the digital layer: simulation dashboards, automated reporting and AI-assisted feasibility tooling that turn site data into decisions. The result is practical infrastructure that stays reliable, and stays measurable.

Currently: EV charging, solar and distributed-energy systems

02Practice

What I do,and how I do it.

A dual-competence stack: sustainable engineering in the field, applied data and automation behind the dashboard. Three domains, one operating method.

01Physical Systems

Engineering & Infrastructure

Solar PV microgrids, hybrid backup systems and EV fast-charging depot architecture: sized, installed, commissioned and maintained for fleet uptime of up to 94%.

  • Solar PV & off-grid design
  • Battery storage & swap systems
  • Commissioning & O&M
02Smart Automation

AI & Data Engineering

Accelerating clean energy and EV charging feasibility studies with custom LLM workflows, automated Power BI dashboards and GIS geospatial analytics.

  • Energy simulation dashboards
  • Automated technical reporting
  • GIS site selection
03Regulatory Affairs

Project Strategy & Policy

Structuring infrastructure proposals that attract investment, and coordinating technical and policy discussions with EPRA, EMAK, county agencies and NGOs.

  • Feasibility & business modelling
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Stakeholder engagement

Method

01

Assess

Site walk-throughs, load profiling and energy audits. Every recommendation begins with measured demand, not a catalogue.

02

Model

Sizing, tariff logic and payback modelled against local irradiance and KPLC realities, then written up so a non-engineer can sign it off.

03

Deploy

Contractor coordination, commissioning and handover, with compliance mapped to EPRA and EMAK requirements from day one.

04

Operate

Uptime monitoring, fault escalation and operator training, the unglamorous work that decides whether a project survives year three.

Operating principle

Infrastructure only counts once it stays on. Everything I build, solar arrays, charging hubs, dashboards, is designed to be maintained by the people who live next to it.
